Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is where patients or others with relevant lived experience shape and influence a research process. This might range from identifying topics and questions to be researched, to advising on how the research should be conducted.
For example, the framing of recruitment materials or interview questions, or being part of data analysis. PPIE members also help with how the research is disseminated, for example by co-delivering presentations, articles, and accessible plain language summaries and reports.
PPIE is therefore a broad set of practices for ensuring that research is conducted with patients and people with relevant experience.
