Course information

Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) requires robust development processes to demonstrate quality, safety and effectiveness.

This course introduces the role of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in SaMD development and focuses on three key areas: traceability, verification and validation.

You will explore how development activities can be documented and tracked, how software can be tested against specified requirements, and how reproducible software environments can support validation. Practical software development approaches—including repository organisation, version control, testing, automated quality checks, CI/CD, dependency management and containerisation—are introduced throughout the course to demonstrate how quality can be built into the software development lifecycle.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the role of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in supporting the development of safe, reliable and regulatory-ready Software as a Medical Device (SaMD).
  • Describe and apply key traceability practices, including repository organisation, version control, documentation and change tracking, to create a clear and auditable software development history.
  • Explain how verification demonstrates that software has been built correctly, using testing, automated quality checks, requirement traceability and CI/CD practices.
  • Describe how software engineering practices support validation, including consistent packaging, dependency management, containerisation and reproducible environments.
  • Recognise how traceability, verification and validation work together to strengthen software quality, safety, reliability and future regulatory compliance throughout SaMD development.
