Course information

Much of the information in Electronic Health Records (EHRs) is held in unstructured, natural language text. This is usually in the form of correspondence between clinicians, or short notes added in to the EHR. If we wish to reuse EHRs for research, then we need ways to handle this text.

This course explores Natural Language Processing (NLP), and its use in extracting this information from EHR text. The course aims to equip you with an understanding of NLP and its techniques, in particular when applied to biomedical texts such as the unstructured, free text portion of medical records.

Learning objectives

  • Decide when it is appropriate to use NLP to help with the analysis of medical records and other biomedical text,
  • Implement NLP solutions based on this decision.
  • Evaluate the solution.
  • Investigate ways in which NLP science can be extended to improve performance and tackle new challenges.
